US Surgeon General warns alcohol is a leading cause of cancer in new report

Cancer and alcohol are closely linked, with numerous studies highlighting alcohol's role in increasing the risk of developing various types of cancer. When consumed, alcohol is metabolized into acetaldehyde, a toxic compound that can damage DNA and disrupt cell function, leading to cancerous growth. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies alcohol as a Group 1 carcinogen, meaning there is sufficient evidence to prove its cancer-causing potential.

Alcohol consumption is associated with cancers of the liver, breast, colon, esophagus, and mouth. Even moderate drinking increases risk, with the risk rising significantly for heavy drinkers. Additionally, alcohol can weaken the body's immune system, making it harder to fight off cancer cells.

The best way to reduce the risk is to limit alcohol intake or avoid it altogether. Awareness about the link between alcohol and cancer is crucial for making informed health choices. Making changes to drinking habits can help lower cancer risk and promote overall health.
